Why Have a Firewall?

A firewall is a device that protects networks and computers that are connected to the Internet.

All the time that your computers or network are connected to the Internet they are at risk from hackers and viruses. Certain types of connection are inherently more risky due to the fact that they are always-on (e.g. broadband connections).

A firewall essentially filters network traffic being sent to your PC or network whilst allowing your outgoing traffic to pass through. It can be used to block certain types of network traffic leaving your network less vulnerable to attack.

It should not be seen on its own as a panacea for network security, but should always be used in conjunction with antivirus software and a sensible security policy.

Firewalls vary considerably in specification - and price - depending upon the size of the business and the level of security and services required.

Home office users may opt to choose a personal firewall solution such as ZoneAlarm, whereas corporate users may benefit from using a standalone 'firewall in a box' such as the SonicWALL firewall.
